Sadly, my new Epson doesn’t have a flat feeder, so I can’t use this anymore. Sanded or Frosted Shrink Plastic (like Shrinky Dink Ruff n Ready) has a rough side that holds colored pencils and even crayon.

Common Shrink Plastic Printing Myths

It’s best to use fairly light shades of pencils, as any colour you use will darken when you shrink the image. This works fine if you are a paper crafter who can stamp with archival inks, or you have a great selection of permanent coloured pens, but your average crafter does not. On top of creating perfect personalised embellishments, you’ll also discover that the mysterious shrinking process provokes childlike delight every time, whilst producing elegant and sophisticated results! Remember that the colours might change slightly during the shrinking process, so you may need to adjust your colouring strategy accordingly. If you’re using a reference image, print or draw it out beforehand so you have a physical copy to work with. You can either draw your design freehand directly onto the plastic or use a reference image that you can trace over.

• Once the designs have shrunk and flattened, remove the baking sheet from the oven using oven mitts and let the Shrinky Dinks cool completely before handling.
• While Shrinky Dinks are a fantastic kids’ activity, always supervise young children during the baking process.
• You can draw your design lightly with a pencil then go over it with a permanent marker or colored pencils.

Surface Finish

However, remember to use a flat baking surface, such as a baking sheet, to ensure even baking and prevent any warping. During the baking process, watch for the Dinks to curl and then flatten out. After a moment, you should see the plastic begin to curl, and then shrink and flatten back out. If any Shrinky Dinks remained curled take a flat object (we used a craft rolling pin or you could use a spatula) to flatten them out. Pop it in the microwave for a few minutes, watch it shrink, curl, and then flatten out with gentle motion to create a distinctive tag in a beautiful pattern. As it heats up, it will curl and bend before flattening back out.

Color and Printing Quality

Just make sure to use permanent markers or colored pencils that are suitable for use on plastics for best results. Remove them from the oven once they have flattened out again and let them cool completely before handling. Bake for 1-3 minutes, or until the plastic has shrunk and flattened out again. Once they flatten out again, remove them from the oven and let them cool completely.

Signs Your Shrinky Dinks Are Ready

I mean, who knew that crafting could be this fun and easy? Plus, they’re compatible with inkjet printers so you can easily print out your favorite patterns or photos. These sheets are the perfect addition to my collection. Trust me, this is the perfect gift for any crafty mom or grandma out there! I have always struggled with finding the perfect gift for my mother-in-law on Mother’s Day.

If it sticks to itself, carefully separate it and place it back in the oven until it lays flat. Remove from the oven when Shrinky Dink plastic has been laying flat for 30 seconds. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place your designs on top. Use colored pencils on the rough side of the film. Cut the flat parts of the plastic out of your container (or grab your sheet of store-bought plastic). Once you have selected your shrinky dink plastic and medium, follow these shrinky dink instructions. Let the kids make any designs they wish and then cut them into shapes for them after. I stink at freehand cutting, but if you are creative with that or have some large punches, you can cut out your own shapes as I did here. It’s so much fun to watch recycled plastics shrink to a fraction of the original size and show the bright colors of what you created.
